The so-called azo dyes form the largest group of dyes used today. Some of them can release toxic and carcinogenic amines or cause allergies. This happens through contact with sweat and/or saliva, which causes the amines to dissolve and enter the body. Therefore, they cannot be used within the EU to dye fabrics, jewelry or cosmetics. Unfortunately, controls are not sufficient, so imported items containing these dyes are discovered again and again.
