For our new magazine, we spoke with artist and founder of The Colorful Crew, Nina Greif-Reitzenstein. We explore her creative process through the five senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. She shares what inspires her, how ideas take shape, and why, in the end, one thing matters above all else: truly finding yourself in what you wear (and what you surround yourself with).
What do you see or visualize in your mind's eye when you create?
When I create, it's more about feeling than seeing. With paper cutting, emotions act like forces – and I translate exactly these into shape and color. Emotion is the foundation of my artwork.
When do you know you have the right "instinct" or that your work is finished?
It's hard for me to explain when a piece is truly finished – I just know. It's that clear "yes" feeling. If it's not there, the artwork isn't complete yet. A state I don't particularly like. What I start, I like to finish.
Do you need music, sounds, or rather silence and calm to work?
It varies – depending on my mood and the collection. Music is often a good companion. However, I can't work well with people around me – I prefer to be completely alone.
What strengthens or "nourishes" you during your work process?
Essentially, in the moment of creation, the creative thoughts nourish me; I don't need food for that. Creativity is the nourishment.
What or how should the wearer feel when wearing your designs?
In the end, the wearer should above all feel one thing: herself. That's what it's about. That is always the goal. You are what you wear – or what you surround yourself with.
